This card can reflect a deliberate step back from noise, working quietly, thinking before moving, or choosing solitude over company for a while. Waite reads the raised lamp as attainment being offered rather than a search still underway, which gives the withdrawal a purpose beyond retreat. The older divinatory meanings also carry a warning about concealment, so the card can ask whether stepping back is clarity or cover.

Traditional meaning.

Waite treats The Hermit as a card of attainment rather than of searching, correcting earlier writers who read the figure as a wise man still looking for truth. The raised lantern is a beacon, and its message is that where the bearer stands, another may also stand. The divinatory list is more guarded: prudence and circumspection sit alongside dissimulation and corruption.

Symbolism

An old figure stands on high ground holding up a lantern in which a star shines, a staff in the other hand. The light is not hidden under the cloak. Height, lamp and staff together read as something reached and then held up for others rather than something still being sought.

In this context

A relationship
Can reflect needing space, or a connection where one person has gone quiet. It may also point to a season of being unpartnered by choice rather than by circumstance.
Work or direction
Often read as doing the work out of view: the phase before anything is presentable. It can also reflect seeking counsel from someone further along.
A decision I am weighing
This can invite you to decide slowly and privately rather than in front of an audience. The traditional keyword is prudence.
Something about myself
A turn inward that is meant to produce something, not simply to avoid contact.

The card sits with the difference between solitude that clarifies and solitude that insulates.

Withdrawal here can be the interval between one chapter and the next rather than a stalling point.

This can reflect solitude that has stopped being useful, withdrawal that began as thinking space and has quietly become avoidance. It may also point to something being kept back: information, a position, or how you actually feel. The tradition names fear directly here, and specifically caution that no longer has a reason behind it, only a habit.

Traditional meaning.

Waite's reversed list is specific: concealment, disguise, policy, fear, unreasoned caution. The lantern that was held up is now turned away. Where the upright card offers what it has found, the reversed card keeps it back, and the caution that was prudence becomes caution without a reason attached to it.

Symbolism

Inverted, the raised lamp reads as light withheld rather than offered. The high ground becomes distance rather than vantage, and the staff supports someone standing still rather than someone who has climbed.

A relationship
Can reflect withholding, not necessarily deceit, often just not saying the thing. It may also point to being harder to reach than you intend to be.
Work or direction
Often read as working in isolation past the point where input would help, or holding back a position to keep options open.
A decision I am weighing
The card can reflect caution operating on autopilot. The traditional phrase is unreasoned caution: worth asking what the reason was and whether it still holds.
Something about myself
Reversed, the inward turn may have become a place to stay rather than a place to pass through.

There may be a gap between the privacy you need and the distance you are keeping.
conflict
This can reflect a disagreement handled by withdrawal rather than by being said out loud.
